Lab member Dr Astrid Andersson, took a week-long break from her postdoc studying cockatoo genomics to complete applied conservation work for a National Geographic Society grant she and 2 fellow NG Explorers were awarded in 2019.  The project work was based in Palawan, the Philippines and was focused on turtle conservation in the island’s protected areas, and how microchipping technology can be used to help protect endangered turtle species from poaching and trafficking. Astrid helped demonstrate and share this technology in a full-day workshop with indigenous rangers, government agency officials and NGO workers.
