Hong Kong’s critically endangered Yellow-crested Cockatoos, Cockatoo systematics and the illegal wildlife trade
Two postdoctoral researchers in our lab have been studying the Yellow-crested and Sulphur-crested Cockatoos and their intraspecifc diversity across their native ranges. In addition, although native to Indonesia, critically endangered Yellow-crested Cockatoos have established themselves in Hong Kong with a thriving population. Research on the genetics of yellow-crested cockatoos and the illegal wildlife trade in Hong Kong has been extensively reported in various local and international media. Our researcher Dr Astrid Andersson is currently setting artificial nest boxes in key habitats around Hong Kong in the hope of providing more suitable nesting spots for these critically endangered parrots.
